Sudatta Ray
I am an Assistant Professor at the Geography Department at National University of Singapore. I also hold a joint appointment at the Environmental Studies Department at Yale-NUS College in Singapore.
I study trade-offs across clean energy transition pathways focussing on impacts on marginalized communities. My projects range from studying unintended consequences of different electrification strategies on productive electricity uses; evaluating electricity provision models in their ability to balance groundwater sustainability to; understanding the environmental trade-offs while considering incineration as a waste management strategy. My research aims to contribute to maximizing social benefits by effectively measuring, targeting and sequencing electrification policies.
I received my PhD from the Emmett Interdisciplinary Program in Environment and Resources (E-IPER) at Stanford University. I hold an MS in public policy and management from Carnegie Mellon University (on a Fulbright Nehru Fellowship in Leadership and Development) and MS and Bachelors in chemistry from Delhi University.
I have over four years of professional experience working with the government of India, World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) and the Council on Energy, Environment and Water (CEEW) on issues of climate change governance and energy policy. As part of the official Indian delegation, I negotiated at various meetings of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change.
